Canonical integrating Ubuntu WebApps in Quantal Quetzal (video)

Canonical integrating Ubuntu WebApps in Quantal Quetzal (video):
Canonical integrating Ubuntu WebApps in Quantal Quetzal
Soon enough, Chrome OS won't be the only game in town when it comes to tightly integrated web apps running on a Linux core. Today Canonical announced Ubuntu WebApps, a new feature that will be integrated into version 12.10 of the open-source OS, Quantal Queztal. In its simplest form this means being able to place an icon in the launcher and open your favorite sites and services as standalone windows. When you visit a compatible page in the browser an alert pops up asking if you want to "install" it as a WebApp. So far, most of the engineers' efforts have focused on Firefox, but Pete Goodall (a product manager at Canonical) said Chrome and Chromium support is also in the works. The really fun starts, though, when devs start playing with the new APIs and Greasemonkey-like extensibility offered. WebApps will be able to access many of Unity's finer features like progress bars in the launcher, the sound menu and messaging menu as well. So now you can get desktop alerts from Gmail without installing some wonky app or setting up Thunderbird. WebApps can even tap into the HUD, though, it'll be up to the devs to expose the appropriate actions to the search-as-you-type menu system.
Of course, this is all just the first step. More APIs will eventually expose additional features, and high on that list is hardware access -- an essential feature for video and voice chat. Another key plan is integrating web credentials with desktop apps. So, if you log into Facebook in the browser, Shotwell will recognize that and upload imported photos to your profile. The initial list of recognized apps is small, but impressive, including Twitter, Last.FM, GMail, Google+, Facebook and YouTube. And, while the feature is set to debut in October with Quantal, Pangolin devotees will also be able to take advantage simply by adding a repository to their software sources.
Update: You'll now find the PR and a nice demo video after the break.

Download nightlies of Firefox OS, get your own hands-on

Download nightlies of Firefox OS, get your own hands-on:
Download Nightlies of Firefox OS
Well, you can't get Firefox OS on a phone yet, but you can fire it up on your computer and give the HTML5 and JavaScript mobile platform a try for yourself -- right now! Mozilla has begun uploading nightly builds of the project formerly known as Boot to Gecko to its FTP servers. You can pull down a nicely wrapped package for Windows, Linux or OS X, or you download the source and build your own. It's not as simple as installing an app, there is some configuring you'll have to do, but the process is relatively simple and you'll find complete instructions at the more coverage link. Obviously the OS is still in the very early stages and is can't be considered representative of what the final product will be like. Still, its a nice glimpse at the progress Mozilla has made in just a single year of development. So, go get your own hands-on time with the next player on the mobile scene.

ZTE's Sprint Flash launches - 12 Megapixel Camera

ZTE's Sprint Flash launches, has 12-megapixel camera

In addition to a powerful camera, the Sprint Flash also has a dual-core CPU, 4G LTE, and Android 4.0.

Sneaking under the radar, Sprint is offering a ZTE handset, known as the Sprint Flash, for $129.99 after users sign a two-year carrier agreement and send in a rebate.

The 4G LTE device ships natively with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, and sports a 4.5-inch HD touch screen.
Under its hood is a 1,780mAh battery, which roughly translates to 8 hours of reported talk time. It's also equipped with NFC.
Perhaps most notable, however, is the Flash's 12-megapixel camera, which features single-motion panoramic shooting as well.
As a Sprint handset, a 12-megapixel camera isn't a huge surprise, especially considering Sprint's Optimus G hosts a 13-megapixel camera. But the fact that this is from ZTE, however, is. The Chinese phone manufacturer isn't really known in the U.S., so it'll be interesting to see if this 12-megapixel lens will boost this handset up or perform underwhelmingly.

Google Nexus 4 Sells Out in Minutes

Both 8GB and 16GB variants of smartphone sold out.

Google's Nexus 4 smartphone, which launches globally today, sold out in just a few minutes after its launch.

Visitors to the Google Play store are now shown a "coming soon" notice for both the 8GB and 16GB versions of the handset. A variety of customers have reported that they've had trouble accessing the store or checking out successfully.

Elsewhere, the UK Google Play store also had its inventory of the Nexus 4 sell out in less than an hour of the order page opening. Dutch blog AndroidWorld, meanwhile, reports that a planned Netherlands launch for the device has been cancelled for now due to high demand in other regions.

The Nexus 4 was commended for its $299 starting price, with the device itself shipping with the latest Android version, Jelly Bean 4.2. Along with the 4-inch smartphone, Google also launched its Samsung-developed Nexus 10 tablet today.

Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 takes on Google Glass in 2013

Vuzix Smart Glasses M100 takes on Google Glass in 2013:
Vuzix has revealed its challenge to Google’s Glass, the Vuzix Smart Glasses M100, a wearable Android computer set to hit the market in early 2013. Resembling an oversized Bluetooth headset, the Ice Cream Sandwich-based M100 consists of a virtual display eyepiece, integrated WiFi and Bluetooth, a 720p HD camera, and head-tracking sensors, and can work in partnership with your iOS or Android smartphone for all manner of augmented reality applications.

That can include hands-free calling, photography, web browsing, and SMS messaging, as well as visual navigation using services like Google Maps. Any smartphone app which can output to an external monitor will be supported. The 3-axis head tracker is paired with a gyroscope, GPS, and a digital compass for pinning down your location, and there’s an earpiece and noise-canceling microphone for calls and speech commands.

The display itself runs at WQVGA resolution with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, and gives the impression of looking at a 4-inch smartphone display viewed at a distance of 14-inches. It has more than 2,000 nits of brightness, essential for outdoor visibility when it will be competing with sunlight, and can be used with either the left or right eye.
As for the camera, that shoots widescreen video and images at 1280 x 720 resolution, and can save shots to up to an 8GB memory card. The whole thing runs a specially-fettled version of Android 4.0 on a 1GHz OMAP4430 processor with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of flash storage, with WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, along with physical power, select, and volume up/down keys.

Vuzix says the battery in the M100 is good for up to 8hrs of handsfree use, or two hours of hands-free use with the display active. That unfortunately halves to just an hour if you want to use the handsfree, display, and camera simultaneously. Google hasn’t discussed battery life for Project Glass in any detail yet, but balancing power consumption, functionality, and portability is going to be a challenge for all wearable device manufacturers. Mounting is via either an over-ear hoop, an over-head band, or a band behind the head.
Vuzix will be offering an SDK for app developers to hook their software directly into the Smart Glasses M100, and since the wearable is a standalone computer in its own right it will readily work with both iOS and Android phones and tablets. It’s already caught the attention of CES, winning the “Best of Innovations” awards in design and engineering for 2013.
Exact pricing and availability for the Vuzix M100 haven’t been revealed, with the company telling SlashGear only that it’s due early next year. However, a developer kit – including the Windows-based emulator, sample code, access to a private coders portal with assistance from Vuzix, and the promise of an early production M100 when available – is priced at $999, with the software elements of the bundle expected to be available in December 2012.

[XAP] WP7 Root Tools 0.12 alpha

[XAP] WP7 Root Tools 0.12 alpha:

Download here: www.wp7roottools.com

I'm proud to announce the immediate availability of WP7 Root Tools 0.12 alpha! New main features: Policy Unlock v2, 16 languages, Advanced File-system and Registry Search, Certificate Stores and Tweak Section.

Unlocking Homebrew Native Executables for Interop Unlocked devices has been a long-time prestige-project for me. And now it's here :)

WP7 Root Tools

With this tool you get root-access to your WP7 device. The current version contains the Policy Unlock Installer, a registry-editor, a file-explorer with many file-operations, certificate-stores, a policy-editor and a tweaks-section. This is your all-in-one system-tool for Windows Phone 7.

If you like this app, you can donate to buy me a beer (or two).

With WP7 Root Tools I attempt to open up the system in a gentle way, so that users stay in control of their device, while homebrew apps can get more control to get the maximum power out of your Windows Phone device!

Supported Devices

  • Samsung first and second generation devices with Interop Unlock

  • LG devices

  • HTC first generation devices with Mango v1 drivers (SPL 4.x or lower)

  • Samsung first generation devices with custom ROM and Full Unlock

  • HTC first and second generation devices with custom ROM and Full Unlock

  • NOKIA devices with custom ROM and Full Unlock

Your phone needs to have at least INTEROP-UNLOCK. If you get error 0x81030120 when you deploy WP7 Root Tools to your device, then please read this guide! WP7 Root Tools will also work on devices with Full Unlock. If you want to know more about the different types of unlocks or if you want to know why WP7 Root Tools may or may not run on your WP7 device, you should read this guide.

Don't be stupid, make a backup!!

This tool is still in alpha stage. That means not yet properly tested. This tool also provides you with high privileges with which you can alter low level settings and data on this device. All this may result in unexpected and undesired behavior, which may ultimately damage your device. Use this tool with care and use it at your own risk. The developer of this tool cannot be hold responsible for any kind of damages, caused directly or indirectly by using this tool.

You can find backup-programs here on XDA. For example WP7 Easy Backup Tool by MarcHoover or WP7 Backup App by hx4700 Killer.

Installation

On devices with custom ROM and Full Unlock, the installation of WP7 Root Tools will be pretty straight-forward. You install the XAP and it works. On devices with stock ROM's WP7 Root Tools need to install Root Access. The first time it runs, a 2-phase-installation will start. The app will inform you to start the first install-phase. Then the device will reboot after a few seconds. After the reboot you need to start WP7 Root Tools again immediately! Then the second phase of the installation will start and your device will be rebooted again. After the second reboot you are ready to use WP7 Root Tools.

Update to a new version

If you have an earlier version of WP7 Root Tools installed and you have WP7 Root Tools Policy Unlock, I strongly advise to UPDATE the app, instead of doing a full install-cycle. Many XAP installers will do a full install-cycle. That can lead to problems, because during the installation WP7 Root Tools will temporary loose its Root Access. In that case WP7 Root Tools needs to do the 2-phase-installation again. This is usually not a problem, but future OEM- or OS-updates could make it possible that the reinstall will not be possible. So, to be on the safe side, first make a backup of the device (use a backup tool from the XDA forums) and then use a XAP installer that has the possibility to update an app. One such utility is XAPDeployX 0.9.

Registry Editor

The registry editor in WP7 Root Tools allows full Root Access to the registry. Be very careful with your tweaks, because this may profoundly influence the behavior of your device.

To delete a registrykey or -value you can tap-and-hold the item and choose delete in the context-menu.

The new version also has Advanced Search functionality.

File Explorer

The file-explorer supports all file- and folder-operations, like copying, moving, renaming and deleting files and folders. To select multiple files at once, you can tap an item on the left, which will pop up selection-boxes.

When you select files and folders with the selection-boxes, the file-operations can be chosen from the Applicationbar. It is also possible to tap-and-hold an item and choose the file-operation from the context-menu.

You can tap on an item to launch or open it. It might be necessary to give the app that needs to open the file root-privileges first. The new version of WP7 Root Tools allows you to give Root Access to System Apps like Office Mobile. So if you've given Root Access to Word, you can tap txt-files in any location to open them with Word. The new version will also allow you to give Root Access to Homebrew Native executables. The file-explorer shows whether an executable is "Installed" or "Not installed". If you tap (or tap-and-hold) on an executable that is not yet installed, you can choose to unlock the executable, give Root Access and launch it.

The new version also has Advanced Search functionality.

Certificate Installer

You might wonder why I created a certificate installer, because it is already possible to add certificates. When you email a certificate to yourself and tap that attachment, WP7 will install it. But if you install like this, the certificate will always be installed in the "Root" certificate store. With my certificate installer you can also install in "CA", "My" and "Code Integrity" stores. This may be very useful for hacking attempts. You can install a certificate by browsing to the ".cer" file and tap it. The possibilities for getting a certificate file on your phone will follow below. If you start installing certificates on your phone you should consider making backups in advance. I once experienced Zune going totally bezerk after installing certs. Zune took 100% and lost connection with the phone all the time. Everything was back to normal when I deleted the certs. In this version there is no view on the certificate stores available yet. In a future version you will be able to view the contents of all the certificate store and also uninstall certificates from there.

Certificate Store

You can browse the 4 certificate stores. Tap-and-hold will show a context-menu. You can delete certificates or save them as a .cer file. Be aware that if you delete a certificate you can do severe damage to the system. So, be careful with that!

Policy Editor

The Policy Editor will show a list of all the installed apps. You can use the Policy Editor to give other homebrew app a "trusted" status. With this you will give the app Root Access privileges. So be very careful to which app you give Root Access!! You are responsible for giving access to an app! If you are not sure, read the forums to decide if an app is trust-worthy. The new version will also show System Apps. This is done because for devices that make use of Policy Unlock, it is useful to give Root Access to System apps sometimes. For example to open txt-files outside the My Documents folder.

It is also possible to launch apps from this list, by tapping on the app. But some apps will fail to start from here, because their default task is not configured correctly. This is not an issue in WP7 Root Tools, but those apps were simply not designed to be launched like this. They are listed anyway, because it could be useful to give Root Access to these apps.

Policy Unlock v2 also allows xap-packages with special configs to automatically give unlock Native Homebrew executables when the app is given Root Access. Read more in the "For developers" and "Desktop Sync" sections.

I've been working on unlocking Native Executables for a really long time now. Ever since I started this thread on XDA. I know it has been possible to run native executable using Full Unlock. But Full Unlock is only possible on WP7 devices with unlocked bootloaders. With the introduction of WP7 Root Tools Policy Unlock v2 also devices which have only Interop Unlock can now run these programs! But that was not the only goal. This unlock has become a prestige-project for me. Because I wanted to fully understand and control the WP7 Policy Engine. I now finally succeeded in doing this :)

So, is Policy Unlock v2 the same as Full Unlock?? No. But almost! Unfortunately, Policy Unlock still doesn't allow you to run Homebrew drivers, like the DFT Bluetooth stack. Later on I will try to apply the Policy Unlock hacks on the drivers too.

Tweaks

WP7 Root Tools adds a few Search-providers for Internet Explorer. You can choose it here. There are some more tweaks to customize your devices. If you have more ideas to add to this page, leave me a note.

Multi-language

The current version supports 16 languages: English, Dutch, Russian, German, Portuguese, Chinese, Hungarian, Czech, Spanish, Slovak, Polish, Italian, Greek, French, Turkish (in separate download-package) and Arabic (in separate download-package). The translations are done by volunteers and some elements by translation-engines. So the translations may not be perfect. Following versions will improve and add more translations.

For developers

I also created an SDK for developers, who can use to profit from Root Access. It provides a way to gain access to the filesystem and the registry (and more) from their managed Silverlight application. No need to worry about COM interop and C++ anymore! The package contains a read-me with short instructions. More details and examples will follow soon here on this site!

The new WP7 Root Tools has Policy Unlock v2 to unlock Homebrew Native Executables. You can do that using the WP7 Root Tools Explorer. But if a developers want to use such binaries in an app, it would be very user-unfriendly if the user needed to unlock these binaries manually. For this purpose I added functionality in the WP7 Root Tools Policy Editor. When an app is give Root Access, it will scan the app for a file called RootAccess.xml. If present, the xml is parsed and the binaries that are listed will automatically be given Root Access too. This is the format for RootAccess.xml:

Code:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<RootAccess>

        <Executable File="Native\NativeApp.exe" />

        <Executable File="Native\NativeWinApp.exe" >

                <Destination Path="\Windows\NativeWinApp.exe" />

        </Executable>

        <Library File="Native\NativeLib.dll" />

        <Library File="Native\NativeWinLib.dll" >

                <Destination Path="\Windows\NativeWinLib.dll" />

        </Library>

</RootAccesss>

Take these notes into account:

  • The Destination paths are optional

  • Libraries are signed in Source and Destination

  • Executables are signed in Source and Destination

  • Executable gets policies in Source and Destination

  • File-path-attribute-value is relative to app path

  • Destination path is absolute

The first app that makes use of this feature is Ultrashot's WMDC Launcher, which can be used for Desktop Sync, as described in the next section. Ultrashot will soon make Opera Mini compatible with Policy Unlock too.

Desktop Sync

Ultrashot has released WMDC Launcher some time ago. Back then it was only possible to use that on devices with Full Unlock. With the introduction of Policy Unlock v2, it is also possible to run the app on devices that are compatible with WP7 Root Tools. Ultrashot has added RootAccess.xml to the xap-package, so the app will automatically be configured when it is given Root Access. Warning: it may take a while to apply on all unlocks, so be patient and let WP7 Root Tools do its job.

After WMDC Launcher is installed, given Root Access and lauched, you can use it to sync file-system and registry with your PC. On the PC you need to have Zune installed and running, and you need to have Windows Mobile Device Center installed and running. After that you Windows Phone will show up as Mobile Device in Windows Explorer.

For unrestricted remote Registry editing you can use Registry Workshop, or similar. In the registry editor you have to connect to the Mobile Device.

Thanks!

Special thanks to these people:

BlackBerry 10

BlackBerry 10, new BlackBerry smartphones will arrive January 30

The launch for the BlackBerry 10 operating system will take place on January 30, 2013, according to a statement issued by Research in Motion. The event will also include the formal debut of the first two BlackBerry 10 smartphones.
RIM first made mention in October 2011 of what was to become BlackBerry 10, an operating system that the company promised would fuse BlackBerry 7 with the QNX OS it acquired to power the BlackBerry PlayBook released in April 2011. Some of BB 10’s features were unveiled earlier this year in May and then a few more in September, including the ability to handle apps running in the background by swiping back and forth, “active frames” similar to Windows Phone’s live tiles that are actually minimized versions of running apps, and the BlackBerry Hub, which manages notifications and centralizes all received messages into one location.
BlackBerry and RIM have continued to lose market share as the company's developers have been hard at work on the new OS. Though it has been a long time in the works, many aspects of BB 10 revealed so far only serve to get RIM caught up with iOS 6 and Android 4.2; other features surpass the capabilities of the two bigger names, but are relatively minor in importance. Some compelling hardware couldn't hurt, but precious little information has been released about the devices that will launch the platform

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web

Flickr adds to sharing options, now easier to share photos across the Web:

flickr

It sure is nice to see some new developer action over at Flickr. The relatively slow-moving photo-sharing service has just announced a new sharing update, which consists of several new and easy ways to embed or link to your photos:

  • Share from Photo page: There's a new sharing option on each and every photo page. When logged off, the button shows only Facebook and Twitter options. But once you log on, you get Tumblr and Blogger too, and can configure other sharing venues as well.

  • Share non-public content on Facebook: This doesn't sound like a great idea, but you now can share private photos on Facebook if you're so inclined (and if you trust your privacy settings).

That's the gist of the update; it makes it easier to show off your pretty pictures in a plethora of places.

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers

Windows Home Server 2011 released to manufacturers:

windows home server 2011 whs

Just a little under two months after its release candidate went live, Windows Home Server (WHS) 2011 has been finalized and released into the wild. The new version of Microsoft's slick, do-it-all server OS is a big step forward from its predecessor.

Built on the Windows Server 2008 R2 base, Home Server 2011 features a simpler dashboard, a better backup solution, dead simple remote access to your home computers, and Silverlight-powered remote media streaming. For a more detailed look at what's new in Windows Home Server 2011, you check out Microsoft's official breakdown.

Drive Extender, of course, didn't resurface for the final release of WHS 2011 and that's something a lot of power users are still pretty irked about. Even without Extender, Windows Home Server offers a boatload of useful functionality and might be a good fit for your home network. Manufacturers have already begun building hardware, so you should be able to pick up a device in the very near future.

An evaluation download for Windows Home Server 2011 will be made available in April -- we'll let you know when the links are ready.

According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven't been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore -- which is being referred to as History Vault -- has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We've also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It's believed that you'll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that's left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers

webOS 3.0 beta now available to developers:
hp touchpad webos 3.0
With the webOS 3.0 SDK available for almost two months, HP has now given developers access to a beta download of webOS 3.0 -- which powers the upcoming TouchPad and will likely ride along on HP desktops and laptops in the form of an emulator.

Right now, the webOS 3.0 beta is only available to Early Access developers. The crew at PreCentral states that HP appears to have eased up on access restrictions, however, so hopefully more devs will get on board and those of you who are planning to buy a TouchPad in the next couple months will have plenty of slick webOS 3.0 apps to install on your new tablet.

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views

Google's Blogger platform adds five new HTML5 Dynamic Views:
Google Blogger Mosaic Dynamic View
Google, as part of its ongoing and much-needed overhaul of its popular Blogger platform, has just enabled five dynamic, HTML5ish, AJAXy 'Dynamic Views'. There's a video introducing the new layouts after the break.

The five new views provide fresh and interesting ways to explore your favorite Blogger blogs. The Mosaic view, for example, creates a wall of thumbnails -- click one, and it zooms to fill the screen; click it again and it minimizes. Flipcard is similar to Mosaic, but not quite as eclectic. Sidebar, Timeslide and Snapshot round off the new views, with each one obviously targeted at different types of content, from photo blogs, to text-only philosophy blogs, and everything in between.

For now, you have to visit a Blogger blog and add /view to the URL to enable the new Dynamic Views. If you own a Blogger blog, you can disable the new views -- and really, why weren't they disabled by default?

If feedback is positive -- which we're sure it will be -- these Dynamic Views will soon be enabled by default. You'll also be able to edit the views in much the same way as current Blogger templates.

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus:
LizaMoon SQL injection rogue AV
Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: it pops up a rogue AV program called Windows Stability Center, but that's it. Better yet, the rogue antivirus is already recognized by a bunch of real antivirus suites, including Avast, Panda and Microsoft Security Essentials.

The real problem with SQL injection attacks is that there's nothing we surfers can do about them. There will always be old and unmaintained websites, and thus SQL injections will remain one of the easiest and most lucrative tools of hackers and spammers alike. All you can do is keep your antivirus and anti-malware software up to date, and pray.

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers

Google Cloud Print comes to HP ePrint printers:
hp google cloud print
HP has become the first major OEM to deliver support for Google Cloud Print in retail-boxed printers. In an official release, HP announced that its ePrint-enabled printers are now fully Cloud Print compatible. Just sign in to your Google account, pick your HP ePrint device, and you're ready to fire off a print job from anywhere you've got Internet access. Well, as long as your app supports Cloud Print as well -- like Gmail and Google Docs, for example.

We're curious, though -- how many of you are still printing? Like our pals at Engadget, our printers have been mostly gathering dust for the last few years.

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users

Facebook launches unified mobile site, announces 250 million mobile users: Facebook has announced that its two mobile sites -- m.facebook.com and touch.facebook.com -- have been unified, bringing a simpler mobile experience to Facebook users. And there are a lot of those -- a quarter billion, according to Facebook.

Smartphone users won't be losing any functionality because of the consolidation. If your phone supported the enhacned features offered by touch.facebook.com, the new site will automatically flip the switch when you visit.

Rolling the sites together helps simplify things for Facebook's developer team. Now changes can be pushed to a single site instead of two separate sites, which makes it easier to ensure that all mobile users receive a nearly identical experience regardless of the device they're using.

The new Facebook mobile can also check to see if your phone supports geolocation. If it doesn't, you won't be seeing much of Facebook Places -- which obviously relies heavily on geolocation. Images can also be optimized on the fly to keep page performance from suffering on less powerful devices. You can see the three different versions of the share button below, courtesy our friends at TechCrunch.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday:
windows phone 7
Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors' app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or "lite" apps, "increasing tonnage" by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That's all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds -- and we're still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would've made a pretty nice first birthday present -- along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

Evoluce Win&I brings Kinect gesture controls to Windows 7

Evoluce Win&I brings Kinect gesture controls to Windows 7:
evoluce win&i windows 7 gesture control kinect
We've been looking at some pretty cool Kinect and Windows interactions for a while now, but we were hoping that the release of an official SDK would lead to even more coolness. Evoluce has stepped up, and is now offering Win&I -- a full-featured gesture control system for Windows 7.

The company claims that a range of up to four meters is supported, which should be perfect for just about any home theater setting. In the video embedded after the break, you can see an Evoluce demonstrator flip through a photo album, pan through a map, rearrange application windows, browse the Web, and control media playback. Two versions of Win&I are offered -- the home version goes for about 20 Euros, the business version for 40.

Anyone else having fun pretending his stance is a little "Iron Man"? We're tempted to put a repulsor on that hand.

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows

OmmWriter brings its clean, calm writing interface to Windows:
ommwriter
I have a thing for full-screen text editing. I use WriteMonkey for my creative writing needs, and VIM in a full-screen PuTTY session for my Web development work. That being the case, I'm all over the monospace, dark-background, focused editing scene.

OmmWriter attempts to take that aesthetic and make it somehow more spiritual, with three picturesque backgrounds and ambient background audio tracks (there are seven of each in the paid version).

I'm of two minds about this app. On the one hand, yes, it's beautiful. But if you want music as a background to your writing, why not pick your own soundtrack with Winamp or Foobar2000 running in the background?

OmmWriter also offers three keyboard-clicking sounds, which are kind of nice. None of these features are groundbreaking, really. OmmWriter could be seen as a way to gently ease into the world of distraction-free writing -- in case something like WriteMonkey's dark background is just too oppressive for you.

After the fold you can see a video showcasing several of OmmWriter's features and creative soundscapes.

RockMelt Beta 2 redefines bookmarking, gets new Twitter app, is based on Chromium 10

RockMelt Beta 2 redefines bookmarking, gets new Twitter app, is based on Chromium 10:
RockMelt Beta 2

RockMelt
, the Chromium-based social Web browser has reached a new milestone today. Following its first public beta that was released in early March, RockMelt Beta 2 has started being pushed to the browser's users. The new version brings many new features, alongside the usual bug fixes, performance enhancements, and a new base for the browser -- Chromium 10, which also powers Google Chrome's stable channel releases at the moment. The previous RockMelt beta was based on Chromium 9, and it's nice to see it kept up-to-date.

Perhaps the most intriguing new feature in RockMelt Beta 2 is the new bookmarking system, intuitively called View Later. RockMelt's developers have come to the conclusion that, in a modern browser that offers address auto-complete and makes the most visited sites accessible on the new tab page, people don't use bookmarks anymore -- at least not the way they used to back in the day. These days apparently, bookmarking is mostly about saving interesting pages for future reference. Which is where View Later comes in. You just click on the new clock icon at the far right of the address bar (where Chrome's star icon is), and you've added the page you're viewing to your View Later queue. You can even add individual posts from Facebook or Twitter. Your View Later contents are synced using RockMelt's general sync mechanism.

RockMelt Beta 2 also packs a new Twitter app, which now lets you edit retweets, view direct messages, reply to all, and easily use Twitter search. It uses Twitter's new real-time API, so you get the tweets exactly at the moment they're published.

The Chat bar has been redesigned, making it easier to keep track of multiple conversations, since chats are now docked in the Chat bar along the bottom of the browser, where they even stay visible while you browse the Web. Incoming chat messages will trigger notifications, and the ability to drag individual chat sessions out of the bar and into separate windows is still there.

All in all a solid update, that has started rolling out today and will reach all of the browser's users in a week's time. What remains to be seen is how many people are willing to switch from any of the 'big guys' to RockMelt for its added features.

Google mobile search gets redesigned results for stocks

Google mobile search gets redesigned results for stocks:
Google mobile search results for stocks

Google has launched a new mobile-optimized way to display search results for stocks. This works around the inherent limitations of how much information can be shown at once on a phone's small screen by letting you swipe horizontally to navigate.

When you search for your favorite stock ticker symbol on your smartphone, you'll be presented with a result page that can be seen to the left in the image above. It displays an interactive graph on a 'card', and you can switch the amount of time that the graph covers by simply tapping on the buttons below it.

If you swipe the card from the right to the left, you'll be presented with a new 'card' that contains the latest financial news for the company. If you swipe again, you'll get a market overview, and a further swipe will get you to a summary of your stock portfolio (but only if you have created a Google Finance portfolio and are logged in to your Google account).

The new feature is now available in English for iPhone and devices running Android 2.1 or newer. More languages are on the way, but support for other mobile platforms seems unlikely, judging from Google's recent track record.

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is go with redsn0w and PwnageTool for Windows and OS X, minus iPad 2

Untethered iOS 4.3.1 jailbreak is go with redsn0w and PwnageTool for Windows and OS X, minus iPad 2:
PwnageTool 4.3 iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak
Jailbreakers, your iOS 4.3.1 time has come -- the iPhone Dev-Team has updated their redsn0w and PwnageTool utilities to enable an untethered jailbreak of the latest and greatest iOS version. Redsn0w 0.9.6rc6 and PwnageTool 4.3 both use an exploit discovered by Stefan Esser, a German security researcher, best know to the jailbreak community as the man behind the antid0te framework, which implemented ALSR; a random arrangement of data for increased security against hacking.

So, if you're running an iPhone 3GS or 4 (GSM), an iPod touch third or fourth-generation, or an iPad 1 and want to get your jailbreak on, head on over to the Dev-Team blog for official links to both redsn0w (Windows or OS X) and PwnageTool. If you're an ultrasn0w user however, you best wait a little as there's a fix coming for some bugs between iOS 4.3.1 and the older basebands required for carrier unlock. Apple TV 2 owners can also get in on the action, but are limited to PwnageTool for your jailbreak needs. iPad 2 owners I'm afraid you're left out in the cold on this untethered one, as the iPad 2 requires a bootrom-level exploit to install and Apple's latest device is not susceptible to either the current limera1n or SHAtter bootrom exploits.

Gladinet maps Amazon Cloud Drive to your Windows desktop

Gladinet maps Amazon Cloud Drive to your Windows desktop:
amazon cloud drive
Amazon's recently-introduced Cloud Drive is a great place to store your files online. It offers 5 gigs of totally free space, and U.S. users also get access to the handy Cloud Player app (for Web and Android!) which streams music you upload to your Cloud Drive.

The service could be a little easier to use, however. Until Amazon releases a desktop client, Windows users might want to take another look at Gladinet. The multi-service cloud connector has now added Amazon Cloud Drive support and will let you map a network drive letter to your account with minimal fuss.

Once you've added your credentials to Gladinet, just pick the letter you want to assign to the drive and you're good to go. You can then copy files to and from your Cloud Drive, rename items, and manage folders like you would any local hard drive in your system.

The only downside is that the free version of Gladinet gives you a limited number of cloud interactions. Once you use those up, you'll need to upgrade to the paid version, which costs $49.99. If you work with a number of cloud-based storage providers, however, it could be well worth the price tag.
